How to keep your pets cool during summer months
- Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water.
- Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun.
- Be carefull not to over-exercise them.
- Be sure to bring outdoor pets inside when it's extremly hot.
- Animals with flatt faces (ex. Pugs, bulldogs, persian cats) are more susceptible to heat stroke since they are not able to pant as effectively.
- Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Even with a cracked window temperatures can reach over 150 F.
- Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool; not all dogs can swim.
- Keeps walks on hot days to a minimum. Hot asphalt can cause a dogs body temperature to heat up fast and can also burn their paws.
- Dogs can burn just like humans. There is sunscreen available for dogs.
- To help prevent your dog or cat from overheating when traveling by airplane, avioid transporting your companion animal in the cargo section of the plane during hot weather. Always take into consideration both the departure and arrial temperatures.
- Summer is the season for insects. Protect against fleas, ticks, and heartworm.
- Giving your dog a lightweight summer hair cut could help prevent overheating.
- Be sure to attach your dog's identification tags (along with the rabies tag) to his flat buckle collar. ID tags won't do any good being left in a desk drawer at home. Special tattoo ID and microchip ID are also recommended.
